Mechanisms and Treatment of Antipsychotic-Induced Obesity

Abstract
Longterm administration of antipsychotic drugs induces excessive weight gain of patients, and which impaires hE;alth and interferes with treatment compliance. The mechanisms of antipsychoticinduced obesity are variable and complex, but many basic and clinical research has shown that antipsychotics may affect body weight through two prime. mechanisms. Increased appetite is probably related to the interaction of antipsychotics with neuronal receptors to dopamine, serotonin and histaminE;. Additional metabolic-endocrine disruption of weight regulation may be related to the effects of antipsychotic-inducted hyperprolactinemia on gonadal-adren~d steroids and insulin sensitivity.
Programmed physical activity, dietary restriction, anorectic agents, and drugs that counteract hyperprolactinemia has shown to be successful in prevention and treatment of antipsychotic-inducted obesity.
Mechanisms and treatment of antipsychotic-induced obesity were reviewed in this article. In the future, further rE~search is needed for diverse pharrnacological approach which prevent or treat antipsychotic-induced obesity in psychiatry.
